Founded in 2005, the BALLYHOO FOXTROT ORCHESTRA is a vintage ensemble dedicated to recreating the jazz and popular music of the 1910s and 1920s. The eight-piece ensemble employs an instrumentation that enables the group to perform a wide variety of musical genres from the period, including foxtrots, Dixieland jazz, blues, novelty songs, waltzes, tangos, cabaret, patriotic songs, and light classical music. So whether the occasion calls for the Art Deco elegance of the Great Gatsby or the zany exuberance of a Prohibition-era speakeasy, the BALLYHOO FOXTROT ORCHESTRA can supply just the right music.

In 2008, the BFO recorded its first CD, titled “I’m Gonna Jazz My Way.” The CD features nineteen songs that trace the life story of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald.

In 2007, the BALLYHOO FOXTROT ORCHESTRA was added to the Iowa Arts Council’s Performing Artist Roster. Qualifying organizations may apply for matching funds when hiring the BFO.

The BALLYHOO FOXTROT ORCHESTRA has recently recorded its first CD, titled “I’m Gonna Jazz My Way.”

Song Title: “Dixie Jass Band One Step”
Also known as: “The Original Dixieland One Step”

This song is among the very FIRST of the recordings of Jass music. The year was 1917, and it was recorded by the Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB).

Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band ~ ~ ~
Dan Levinson – leader, clarinet & C-melody saxophone
Jon-Erik Kellso – trumpet
David Sager – trombone
Kevin Dorn – drums
Tom Roberts – piano

This performance by Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band is their own version of the piece that was performed in 1917.

I own the CD that Dan produced with 21 songs on it, and I highly recommend it. Every number is unique and exciting!

All of the songs are performed with loving care to be as nearly perfect as posible to the way the ODJB would have sounded if you could have listened to them live in the recording studio back when they made their original recordings.

Song Title: “Livery Stable Blues”

As time passed this piece was also referred to as the “Barn Yard Blues.” It is the very FIRST recording of Jass music. The year was 1917, and it was recorded by the Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB).

Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band ~ ~ ~
Dan Levinson – leader, clarinet & C-melody saxophone
Jon-Erik Kellso – trumpet
David Sager – trombone
Kevin Dorn – drums
Tom Roberts – piano

This performance by Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band is a recreation of the piece as it was performed in 1917. The instruments used and the musical arrangement is as near exact as possible.

Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band
Salutes the ODJB and the Beginning of Recorded Jazz

Here is a list of the songs on the CD ~
2. Dixie Jass Band One-Step (Introducing That Teasin\’ Rag) 2:32
3. I Lost My Heart in Dixieland 3:49
4. Palesteena 2:53
5. Hawaiian Butterfly (Introducing Rose Room) 2:57
6. At the Jazz Band Ball 2:36
7. Alice Blue Gown 3:52
8. Swanee 2:39
9. Sweet Mamma (Papa\’s Getting Mad) (Introducing Strut Miss Lizzie 3:17
10. Ostrich Walk 3:16
11. Home Again Blues (Introducing Lindy) 2:57
12. Tell Me 3:50

This song was one of several I recorded of Dan Levinson’s Roof Garden Jass Band while attending the Annual Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival held in Davenport, Iowa. This was at a set in the famous Col Ballroom, and the band was wonderful.
